This week I spent a little time playing my friend’s 12-string guitar, somehow it seemed like a good idea to round one up for the lesson on Even In The Quietest Moments. The lesson was inspired by a couple things, the first being Dan’s performance of it at IGC 2017, and the second was that Matt (our seldom seen man behind the scenes) has been badgering me since the beginning of TG to get to some Supertramp songs. I have to admit that after listening to most of their albums non-stop lately I have developed a better appreciation for them.
Most of today’s News consisted of messing around with the 12-string and I am open to suggestions of any other songs that you think might make good lessons while I have this behemoth around. I played bits and pieces of Pink Floyd, The Byrds, Led Zeppelin, and ended with In Christ There Is No East Or West by John Fahey but played more in the style of Leo Kottke.
On a different front, I got a call from my good friend Jim Bruno over at TotallyVocals. He is heavily involved in a reunion of his Stickband, some of the pioneers in popularizing the Chapman Stick. Be sure to check out his latest project at stickbandsj.com.
Another thing that I have been considering is getting out into the world away from TG Central and trying to get together with a small group of distant students (like 15-20) for a weekend workshop or mini-camp. The idea would be to do some of what we do at IGC but on a smaller scale.
It would be great to hear if anybody would be interested in spending a weekend in Amsterdam with me and Vanessa, probably in a hotel where we would have a few classes, some semi-private lessons, some performances and open mic nights or afternoons.
Please send me your thoughts on the idea. We are looking at July 7-8, 2018 in Amsterdam and possibly doing something similar on the East Coast the following September or October.
That’s the News for now,
Neil
