His father, an artist, listened to performers such as Andre Segoviato Garbor Szabo to Leadbelly to the Kingston Trio. Early on, at boarding school,Rick remembers his Stella 12 string. He discovered a Martin Guitar one of his school mates owned and he bought it in 1961. In 1963 he apprenticed as a guitar repairman in Boston at the String Instrument Workshop. He opened a small music store in 1964 in the back of a coffee house and life was good. Performers included Doc Watson and Ian and Sylvia, Kweskin Jug Band and Tom Rush.
