In last week’s Update I spent most of the time talking about some different ‘D’ Tunings. This week it is Open G. I want re-encourage you to not feel intimidated by trying something other than standard tuning. For Open G you simply lower three strings a whole step each. This opens the door many Slack Key tunes, as well as early blues like Robert Johnson and The Rolling Stones, since Keith Richards used it regularly.
I played quite a few examples, including Hula Blues, Kimo’s Slack Key, Moloka’i Waltz, The Sailor’s Grave On The Prairie (Leo Kottke), Available Space (Ry Cooder), and ended with Jorma Kaukonen’s Water Song.
I want to thank our TG Subscriber DaveH for uploading a video for review of Ants Marching by Dave Matthews. The review really became almost a complete lesson on the song. I hope some of you take a look and give it a try.
Catch You Next Week,
Neil
