Nirvana was at the forefront of the Seattle grunge scene in the late 1980s and into the 90s. Their sound grew out of punk, pop and rock, and Kurt Cobain’s guitar style could almost be considered minimalist in that he mostly used power chords and mixed them with driving riffs.
Guitar players have long loved playing their songs as the parts are generally not too challenging and are very accessible to intermediate players.
This acoustic set of lessons includes ones from three of our teachers, giving a very broad view of this legendary band and their songs.

Lesson 1: Lithium by Nirvana - Guitar Lesson
Nirvana is known for writing raw and explosive songs, and this tune is no different.
From the very first riff you’ll recognize this catchy song and be surprised at how easy it is to learn.

About A Girl is a song by American grunge-rock band Nirvana, which appears on their debut album ‘Bleach’ and later as the first track of the MTV Unplugged In New York. This lesson is based on the latter.
It features an easy strumming pattern, an unusual progression, a few relatively easy chords, several barre chords which might be harder, and a simple a guitar riff.
The lesson is done in standard tuning, even though the guitars in the unplugged version were tuned down a ½ step.Lesson 4: Lake Of Fire - Nirvana - Guitar Lesson
Lake Of Fire was originally done by alternative band The Meat Puppets. They joined Nirvana for a few of their songs on an episode of MTV Unplugged. This brought a whole new audience to them, and the song.
This lesson is starts off as an ear-training exercise, partly because of a Fly On The Wall lesson I did recently with one of my students, MattF working on it. We end up covering the progression in a couple different keys, as Nirvana’s version was tuned down one-half step, as well as a couple short guitar fills that stand out. The song can be easily played with power chords, or more accurately and harmonically with quite a few barre chords, including some from the ‘A’ family requiring a hinge barre with the third finger.Lesson 5: Polly Guitar Lesson
Kurt Cobain's guitar playing was very basic and he wrote a lot of songs that are accessible to beginners. *Polly* is a great example of just the type of song. It was released in 1991 on their album Nevermind and really just uses a basic set of power chords, although the lesson looks at how Kurt played slightly expanded versions of them. It also includes some ideas about syncopated changes and how to make them smoother.
Lesson 6: Come As You Are Guitar Lesson - Nirvana
Nirvana came onto the scene in the early 1990s and was a major part of the grunge movement that started in the Pacific Northwest, partially inspired by some of Neil Young's songs and styles. Kurt Cobain wrote and sang some very basic songs, most of which are interesting chord progressions along with some cool riffs. Come As You Are is a great example of this as it starts with a simple riff that is followed with a set of 2-finger barre chords. It is important to play the riff with the alternating picking technique, and the barre chords could even be reduced to power chords, making this song even a little easier to play.
