This set of lessons goes into the first building blocks of music theory that every student needs to know.

Lessons

  • Lesson 1: Fundamentals I- From The Beginning

Fundamentals I- From The Beginning presents a clear and concise explanation of terms and definitions that every musician needs to understand in order to get a grasp of general principles of music theory. Neil starts with the concepts of pitch and time, and continues with information about time signatures, tuning the guitar, and how we use the alphabet in music. The student will learn a very simple way to identify all the notes on the guitar.

  • Lesson 2: Fundamentals II- Major Scales & Patterns

Fundamentals II is all about Major Scales and Patterns. The lesson starts with simple definitions, and then continues with covering all the Major Scales in 1st position on the guitar. Once you understand the scale, you can expand it into patterns that can be used for lead playing.

  • Lesson 3: Fundamentals III- Minor Scales & Patterns

Fundamentals III explores Minor Scales and Patterns. It includes an explanation of the Natural Minor Scale, how to play common ones in 1st position, a couple of patterns to use for lead playing up the neck, then goes over the Harmonic Minor Scale and the Melodic Minor Scale.

  • Lesson 4: Fundamentals IV- Pentatonic Scales & Patterns

Fundamentals IV introduces Pentatonic Scales, shows how they are expanded into patterns that cover the entire fingerboard, and how they are used to construct leads in various keys.

  • Lesson 5: Fundamentals V- Modes Inside & Out

Fundamentals V presents a comprehensive look at and concise explanation of the seven classic Modes, how they are related to Major and Minor Scales, how to keep them all straight, and some practical applications.

  • Lesson 6: Fundamentals VI- Chord Construction

Fundamentals VI- Chord Construction is presented in 9 chapters. The first part of the lesson includes 4 chapters that explain Intervals, including listening to many of them, then shows how they are used to construct Triads, which are the foundation of our entire chord structure. The 4th chapter discusses some 3-note non-triads, the Suspended Chords. The lesson continues with Chapter 5 on how Triads are expanded into Seventh Chords, shows a few common ways of playing them, while also teaching you how to find them yourself, then touches on the Extended Chords- ninth, eleventh, and thirteenth.

  • Lesson 7: Fundamentals VII- Chords In A Major Key

Fundamentals VII- Chords In Keys picks up following Chord Construction and explains how to figure out what triads belong to a major key. The lesson includes examples and explanations both on the guitar and the piano.
