One of the biggest bands of the last half-century, U2 came out of Dublin in the late 1970s and really hit their stride with the albums War, The Unforgettable Fire and The Joshua Tree in the 80s. Their distinctive, somewhat minimalist sound is personified by Bono's vocals and the jangly guitar sound of The Edge. This set of songs, mainly taught by Vanessa, includes a couple two-for-one lessons, In God's Country with Running To Stand Still and Angel Of Harlem with Desire, Every Breaking Wave, Stuck In A Moment You Can't Get Out Of and a lesson from Max Rich on Sunday Bloody Sunday.

  • Lesson 1: In God’s Country and Running To Stand Still - U2 - Guitar Lesson

    In God’s Country and Running To Stand Still are songs by Irish rock band U2.

    Both songs are taken from their best selling, fifth 1987 studio album ‘The Joshua Tree’, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary.

    Besides appearing on the same album, and even though one is quite faster than the other, both songs feature the same feel as well as the same key. Like several U2 songs, when stripped down, they turn out to be relatively easy to play.

    This lesson covers the progression, the chords in the key of D, the double time strumming, and also takes, for vocal reasons, a short look at how to play them in the keys of G and A.

  • Lesson 2: Every Breaking Wave - U2 - Guitar Lesson

    Every Breaking Wave is a song by the amazing Irish rock band U2. It is taken from their latest 2014 studio album ‘Songs Of Innocence’.

    The lesson takes a look at the acoustic version as recorded on the deluxe version of the album in which Edge plays it on the piano.

    It features an easy progression in the key of C, using a classic IV, VI, I, V where the guitar is capoed on the 4th fret to match the absolute key of E.

    The arrangement shows a simple fingerpicking arpeggio, copying Edge’s piano playing, for most parts of the song. For the other parts it shows random picking and strumming, while accentuating beats 1, the and of beat 2 and beat 4. It also covers a little melody line in the chorus which might be tricky to some guitar players.

  • Lesson 3: Stuck In A Moment You Can’t Get Out Of - U2 - Guitar Lesson

    U2 are an Irish rock band from Dublin who actually don’t need an introduction at all. They have released 13 albums, won 22 Grammy Awards, more than any other band and are one of the world’s best selling music artists of all time.

    Stuck In A Moment You Can’t Get Out Of is the second single from their 2000 album ‘All That You Can’t Leave Behind’ and won the Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal in 2002.

    U2’s lead singer Bono has stated that he wrote the song about the suicide of his friend Michael Hutchence, lead singer of the band INXS. It’s about a fight between friends which he felt guilty for never having with Hutchence when he was still alive.

    The lesson takes a look at the acoustic version as being performed on the David Letterman show and also other live performances in which Edge plays it by himself.

    The arrangement is done in an open E-tuning, where the 5th and 4th string are raised a whole step and the 3th string a half step. It’s in the key of E, using chords I, II, IV, V, VI, a few out of the key and a diminished chord.

    The playing involves flatpicking, syncopated chord changes and random strumming at the speed of 16th’s with accents on beat 1, the ‘and’ of beat 2 and beat 4.

  • Lesson 4: Sunday Bloody Sunday by U2 - Guitar Lesson

    This ultra-famous song by U2 is one of the band’s most iconic hits and is a great song to learn on acoustic guitar. Unlike many of U2’s songs, this one isn't too heavily riddled with guitar effects, making the replication of the guitar parts on acoustic not too challenging.

    Overall this is a fun and easy lesson that will get you picking and strumming the notes to one of rock’s most beloved tunes!

  • Lesson 5: Angel Of Harlem and Desire - U2 - Guitar Lesson

    This lesson covers Angel Of Harlem and Desire by one of the best selling music artists of all time, U2. They’re taken from their sixth album Rattle & Hum, which was released in 1988.

    The lesson is based on how they perform it acoustically, and when stripped down they appear to be, like many U2-songs, very easy and straightforward, which is the reason why this lesson contains two songs.

    We mainly take a close look at the strumming and the progression. Angel Of Harlem is in the key of C, using chords I, IV, V and VI and is also very easy to transpose.

    Desire consists of only three chords, E, A and D major, but the fast chord changes might be challenging for beginners.
