Lesson notes

It's a Heartache is a song recorded by Welsh singer Bonnie Tyler. It was released in late 1977 and became one of her most successful singles.

Since Rod Stewart's recording is very similar we take a look at his version as well.

Both artists have lowered the key in recent years, and for that the lesson we teach how to play the song in the key of C as well as G. This gives vocalists a chance to put it in their desired key.

We take an elaborate look at the intro, which is the biggest difference between Tyler and Stewart's version. This includes a little flatpicking.

Other than that, we go through all the chords, and the progression. The strumming is fairly straightforward, and it is encouraged to alternate bass notes.

Even though the subject of the song is rather sad, it is much fun to play in front of live audiences.
