Lesson notes

You Don't Own Me is a pop song recorded by Lesley Gore in 1963, when she was 17 years old. It became her most successful recording and she considered it to be her signature song.

Written by Philadelphia songwriters John Madara and David White, it was one of the first songs of its kind to become a feminist anthem, speaking out agains the misogynistic culture at the time. The impact of this song is still evident today.

The progression features two minor keys and four major keys. For that we take a long and close look at all the chords involved, including many barre chords. Of course this might be challenging to some if you don't have those under your belt just yet.

On the other hand, no pun intended, the strumming in 6/8 should be doable for most guitar players.

As for the arrangement, it starts in the key of Em, where the guitar is capoed on the 3rd fret. It changes to E, raises a half step to F, changes to Fm, back to F, raises again to F# and again to G.

The lesson breaks all of this down in great detail.
