TotallyGuitars is thrilled to finally get to a lesson on a Lyle Lovett song, and there are more in the pipeline. If I Had A Boat is from his 1987 release Pontiac. Lovett is a very accomplished guitarist, particularly in the fingerpicking department, and obviously a great songwriter. The song uses a few relatively simple chord shapes, but the challenge is in the picking hand technique.
The lesson goes over some standard fingerpicking patterns and shows how he varies and embellishes them, in a way that never has to be exactly the same. It includes tab to all the examples and variations explained.
