Lesson notes

In this lesson we’re going to learn the groove to rocker Lenny Kravitz’s hit tune, “Fly Away,” from Kravitz’s 1998 album 5. This grammy-winning tune is composed almost entirely of major chords, in a repeating I-II-III-VII-IV pattern. For this lesson we’ll learn 4 sections: the 8-bar introduction, which introduces the harmonic form; the verse groove, which introduces a syncopated bassline which leaves plenty of space for the vocals; the chorus, which returns to a groove similar to the intro but with a more active bassline; and the 2nd verse, which combines the right hand from the chorus with the left hand from the 1st verse.
