In this lesson, we’re going to learn a short gospel jazz phrase and transpose it through all 12 keys. Transposition is an essential element of musical learning, not just in the context of scales and chords, but also with respect to more complex melodic and harmonic phrases, and even entire tunes. When you’re tranposing at the piano, you’re breaking down intervallic relationships, analyzing chord shapes and melodic contours, and navigating the same musical ideas across the unique topographical challenges of different key areas. Transposing in real time gives you a mental workout unmatched by any other exercise, and leads to versatility and quick thinking at the keyboard. We’ll first learn the initial chord sequence and then break it down in as many different ways as possible, encouraging multiple mental connections and methods of recall.
