Lesson notes

"Don’t Speak" was written by Eric Stefani and Gwen Stefani for the alternative rock band, No Doubt. Released in 1996 on their Tragic Kingdom album, the song reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Airplay for 16 weeks, yet didn’t not chart on the Billboard Hot 100 since it was not considered a “commercial single”, which was required at that time to be considered. “Don’t Speak” was No Doubt’s most successful international single reaching #1 in New Zealand, Australia, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands and presumed to be about the breakup of vocalist Gwen Stefani's seven-year relationship with bassist Tony Kanal. This lesson breaks down the song phrase by phrase concentrating on Gwen Stefani's style and especially her dynamics.
