All jazz players know that ii-V-I’s are the foundation for almost all jazz music. By learning how to rearrange simple ii-V-I progressions into a slightly more harmonically complex progression, you can achieve more “outside” sounds. In this lesson, you’ll learn what makes up an upper structure chord and how to use them in standard ii-V-I’s. These substitute chords are a great way to expand your jazz and theory knowledge, all the while gaining greater command of the fretboard and improvisation.
