But honestly? I&#8217;m still living in it a little. The late night jams. The song circles. The moment someone plays Like A Hurricane at 2am in a performance hall and the whole building feels different.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s what <a href=\"https:\/\/internationalguitarcamp.com\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">International Guitar Camp<\/a> does to you.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Camp Recap &#8211; Fall 2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We had 15 people this time around &#8211; a small group, which meant I got real one-on-one time with everyone. Some people twice.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s how the days ran:<\/p>\n<p>Every morning started with an hour of theory or ear training &#8211; listening to chord progressions, understanding what we&#8217;re hearing and why.<\/p>\n<p>Then three rotating groups through 40-minute sessions with Doug Young, Jim Bruno, and Dave Amanov &#8211; our resident songwriter and rock lead player who spent years in Al Stewart&#8217;s band. Mike Mullins was supposed to be there but is recovering from surgery. Miss you, Mike.<\/p>\n<p>Afternoons were private half-hour lessons. That&#8217;s my favorite part of camp. Always has been. One guitar player, one teacher, one conversation about exactly what you need.<\/p>\n<p>Thursday night opened with teachers playing short sets, then an open mic where 10 of the 15 jumped up and played. The second night we tried something that&#8217;s only been part of camp for a couple of years now &#8211; a song circle. Everyone sits together with a guitar and plays a song. Less pressure than a stage. More connection than an audience. It works beautifully.<\/p>\n<p>And the last day &#8211; people played things they&#8217;d been working on together. Collaborations that started at breakfast and finished by Saturday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ll do it again April 7-11, 2027. Three full days. Max Rich will be there. We&#8217;ll start reaching out in January.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/internationalguitarcamp.com\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">More details at InternationalGuitarCamp.com<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Neil Young On The Brain<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A lot of Neil Young got played at camp. <a href=\"https:\/\/totallyguitars.com\/lessons\/1571-like-a-hurricane-neil-young-guitar-lesson\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Like a Hurricane<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/totallyguitars.com\/lessons\/1555-comes-a-time-guitar-lesson-neil-young\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Comes A Time<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/totallyguitars.com\/lessons\/1549-harvest-guitar-lesson-neil-young\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Harvest<\/a> &#8211; the songs that feel both simple and somehow infinite at the same time.<\/p>\n<p>That got me thinking about what makes his chord progressions so interesting. Harvest is a perfect example &#8211; mostly chords in the key of D, moving naturally through the progression, and then suddenly an E chord appears that technically shouldn&#8217;t be there.<\/p>\n<p>But it works. Because Neil Young can.<\/p>\n<p>I also spent some time talking about how to find lead notes over his chord progressions. The key is knowing what notes live in the chords you&#8217;re playing. If you&#8217;re on an E minor 7, your safe notes are E, G, B, and D. Move to an A chord and you add A and C#. Now you have a palette. Play from that palette and you&#8217;re not guessing anymore.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s actually the Dorian mode &#8211; but I&#8217;ll save that conversation for another day.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/totallyguitars.com\/packages\/9-neil-young-acoustic-10-pack-volume-1\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NEIL YOUNG LESSON PACK HERE<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>White Rabbit &#8211; A Cautionary Tale<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Someone at camp requested White Rabbit.<\/p>\n<p>I tried.<\/p>\n<p>Started on E minor when it should have been E major.<\/p>\n<p>You can probably imagine how that went.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s on the list of things to work out properly. I&#8217;ll get there.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Guitar Humidity &#8211; A Question Worth Answering<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A camper named Christopher raised a question on the Forum about humidity and guitars, and it&#8217;s worth addressing here because it&#8217;s genuinely important.<\/p>\n<p>If you live somewhere dry &#8211; really dry, like Arizona &#8211; your guitar is at risk. Wood needs humidity. Without it, the wood contracts, dries out, and eventually cracks. We&#8217;ve seen it happen to beautiful instruments.<\/p>\n<p>A longtime friend and camper named Carrie had a stunning early Santa Cruz Guitar &#8211; one of the first D6s they ever made, back around 1976-77. Living in Arizona took a toll on it. It eventually came back to Santa Cruz to Richard Hoover and the team who built it. They told her it couldn&#8217;t live in Arizona. For years it lived here at our place because it had nowhere else to go.<\/p>\n<p>The practical answer: if you&#8217;re in a very dry climate, look seriously at composite guitars. No wood involved. They&#8217;ve evolved enormously &#8211; they sound genuinely good now and they don&#8217;t care what the humidity is.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/totallylessons.com\/forum\/viewtopic.php?f=207&#038;t=28327\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">READ THE FORUM THREAD HERE<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>One Step Beyond &#8211; Again<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I may have played this one a couple of weeks ago, but it was part of my camp set so it was fresh on my fingers. One Step Beyond is an original composition built entirely around musical intervals in ascending order.<\/p>\n<p>The first melody starts one step above where you&#8217;d expect it to.<\/p>\n<p>The second starts on the sixth.<\/p>\n<p>Then thirds. Fourths. Fifths. Sevenths.<\/p>\n<p>And then the resolution &#8211; a major 7 chord, a minor 7 chord &#8211; and finally home.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s an experiment in hearing what different intervals feel like emotionally. I might actually turn this into a proper lesson one day and break down the theory behind every section.<\/p>\n<p>For now &#8211; it was good to play it somewhere it felt like it belonged.<\/p>\n<p>New update next Friday.
